6 John 1, chapter 30
An Act respecting the Fixed-Term Elections of Members of Parliament and for the Repeal of the Twenty-Seventh Chapter of the Statute of the Parliament that Sat during the Second Year of the Reign of King John, Establishing two days and an intermediate Week of National Days, Reverting to the First-Past-the-Post Election System and for the Repeal of the Ninety-Seventh Chapter of the Statute of the Parliament that Sat during the Third Year of the Reign of King John and Regarding the Balance of Power within Parliament, and for purposes connected therewith
Short Title
- This Act shall be known as the Elections Act, 2023, Bill C6171.
Fixed Terms
- This Act repeals the Fixed Terms Election Act, 2 John 1 c. 27.
- Elections shall take place on 20 June, annually.
Establishment And Constitution Days
- 20 June shall be declared Establishment Day.
- 2 July shall be declared Constitution Day.
- The week set in between these two dates will be declared Baustralia Week.
Voting System
- This Act repeals the Voting (Amendment) Act, 3 John 1 c. 97.
- Elections will take place with the first-past-the-post system.
- Candidates will stand for election for Member of Parliament of a constituency,
- After the election, the candidate with the most votes shall become the Member of Parliament for the said constituency,
- After the election, the party leader with the most seats shall become the Prime Minister, and his party shall be asked by His Majesty to form a government.
- As is precedent, should any by-elections shift the balance of power in the House of Commons, the party who gains the majority of seats will take over the running of the government.
